Nov 2019 The Painted Desert Trip
Day 1: Our trip begins in Delhi, the capital of India. As India can be chaotic, noisy and somewhat of a culture shock,we aim to make this a gentle landing by picking you up from the airport and then whisking you off to your beautifully-designed hotel of domes, waterways and huge, arched windows where you will stay overnight to help you transition to your new time zone.
Day 2: We rise early and after a sumptuous multi-cuisine breakfast we board our luxury bus for Agra, which is about a four-hour drive from Delhi.
Agra is where the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built a breathtakingly-beautiful monument for his wife Mumtaz Begum called the Taj Mahal. It’s one of the 7 wonders of the modern world and a must-see. We will have the privilege of enjoying the Taj at sunset.
Overnight in Agra. The hotel we picked is in close proximity to the Taj Mahal and on good weather days you ought to be able to see ethereal monument from your room.
Day 3: From Agra we drive to Pink City of Jaipur, the capital of the state of Rajasthan. But before we get there we’ll want to make a couple Detours (our specialty) thus arriving into Jaipur in the evening, just in time for an early dinner and then maybe a night cap at the instagram-worthy Bar Palladio.
Days 4 and 5
Jaipur is a city that has something for everyone....it’s crammed with fairy tale palaces, heaving with history, food that hits all the right spots, culture and best of all...shopping! If retail therapy is your thing we can even curate a half-day shopping tour for you.
Day 6: After three nights in Jaipur it’s time to hit the road again! After a breakfast of local delights we drive to the town of Nagaur. Road Trippin in Rajasthan is a real delight, there’s always lots to see: desert vegetation, colourfully-dressed women, camels, cows, little shops, but probably the most looked-forward to are the beautifully-decorated trucks!!
In Nagaur we will head for the massive 12th-century Ahhichatragarh Fort, for within within its walls sits an elegant hotel spread across a cluster of 18th-century havelis. These havelis were originally built for the queens of the Maharaja of Jodhpur but have been carefully restored for the modern and discerning traveler.
Day 7: we will spend the morning exploring the town and after lunch we can make the 2-hour drive to the blue city of Jodhpur, aka. Sun City because it is always bright.
Day 8 :Jodhpur, with its Mehrangarh Fort and the dazzling Ummaid Bhawan (preferred venue for so many celebrity weddings) is always on the map. But we’d like to also show you the outskirts of Jodhpur where you can meet Rajasthani tribes and frolic in the Thar desert.
Days 9 and 10: Two hours away from Jodhpur is the village of Narlai. Here we will stay at a thoughtfully-restored 17th-century royal hunting retreat and one of Rajasthan’s best-loved heritage hotels. It’s perched beneath a large granite peak called Elephant Hill ,a great base for walking, riding and leopard safaris. We will spend two nights here enjoying not just the hotel’s amazing features but also a ride through the stunning countryside, a cave temple and the option of having a candlelit Stepwell dinner.
Days 11 and 12: We get ready to drive to Udaipur or the Venice of the East, but not before making a few spontaneous visits to fascinating Rajasthani villages along the way. We are so proud of our detours but we like keeping them a surprise!!
Udaipur is the last city on the itinerary (unless you’ve signed up for one of our bite-sized tours that continue after Udaipur) and along with the highly instagram-worthy city palace, we’ll visit the legendary Lake Palace that floats on an island in the centre of the glassy Lake Pichola, lending the town a rich, fairy-tale atmosphere. You’ll spend two nights here, staying in a traditional haveli or luxury hotel where you can unwind in style before returning home.
Day 13: We leave for the airport around midday to take our flight to Delhi where will bid you all goodbye, until the next time.
